Target Audience
Meet Eliza Williams, a model example to represent our target audience
We have created a range of social media profiles to present our findings about our target audience, their hobbies and interests, likes and dislikes and general information. We have also thought carefully about the ways in which our target audience interact on different media platforms and with media products and have tried to recreate this on these profiles.

Character Analysis
Male Lead
Our male lead is the typical bad boy type that the female encounters in the indie genre. He is attractive, tall, and always seen wearing dark (mostly black) clothing, which is significant as the colour black connotes power, authority and fear. This links to the character’s personality - he is controlling, abusive and in the eyes of the female his temporary kindness overrules the darkness that resides within him.
He is also often seen drinking until he has reached a point where he doesn’t know what he’s doing and appears powerless, but still managing to play his cards well through emotionally blackmailing the female into forgiving him with his seemingly-innocent state. Alcohol is often associated with addiction and, in extreme cases, any kind of abuse.
Despite all of this he appears to be a good, loyal friend, although he has trouble managing his time equally between his love life and his social life, and clearly does not like to mix the two as he is often seen either picking one or the other, not caring who might get hurt in the process. This is also seen briefly where he refuses to dance with the supporting female, but later complies, which suggests that he had no intention of taking the relationship between them any further and merely saw her as a friend; this further emphasises the fact that he does not mix his love life with his social life.
Female Lead
The female lead is often seen smiling, already showing her to be a happy-go-lucky individual, however despite this she is often seen sitting or standing by herself or at a slight distance from the other characters in the video. This shows that she is introverted and while she likes making friends, she would rather spend time with the male lead, causing some turbulence between them as they share completely opposite views on this specific topic.
Due to her colourful clothing, it is understood that she is a light person on the inside as opposed to her significant other, who is dark. A colour she wears a lot in the video is red, which connotes desire, passion and love, showing her devotion to him while other colours such as blue suggest that she is loyal, soft and understanding, which we also see in the video when she does not confront him about the fact that he is refusing to spend any time with her.
At the party where she is seen to wear a black and white dress, the connotations are very different to the black that the male lead wears, suggesting that she is elegant, while the white shows her to be pure and innocent; her personality contrasts very well with that of the male lead, as they are polar opposites. The way that she suddenly engages in conversation with the supporting male shows her loneliness and sadness at having nobody to interact with.
Supporting Male
From what is seen of the male and the way that he looks at the female lead it is clear that he feels some sort of attraction towards her, further emphasised by him pursuing her when he notices that the male lead has abandoned her. While his intentions appear to be good, there is an underlying slyness to the whole situation and his approach to comforting her when she is upset.
He is the typical hero of the story, jumping to her rescue to show that he is the “good guy” who wants her to be happy and will protect her, however that backfires when the male lead strikes him. As a result of this, he is revealed to be a weak and fearful character compared to the other characters.
Supporting Female
The supporting female is seen as an independent woman who knows what she wants, shown where she is revealed to be the sole host of the party, and also highlighted when she approaches the male lead without any encouraging. Making the first move is typically considered a “man’s job”, which makes her seem strong, powerful and in control of herself, unlike the female lead. Her clothing, which is (sensibly) tight and partly revealing shows that she is confident in herself and her body.
However, aside from the positive aspects of her personality, she also seems to be a bad friend due to the fact that as soon as the female lead rejects her, she slides over to the male lead and attempts to flirt and dance with him, knowing that his girlfriend can see it happening.

Location Recce - House Party
This is our second location, which we have decided to use for the house party scene. We were looking for a location that would represent a realistic location for a house party with young people. We decided on this location as it is a small house which is lived in by students and young people who would form part of our target audience. We know our target audience do not have a high income and therefore this is the type of accommodation that they might live in. We know that Indie Pop video locations are often low-budget, and this location reflects this because we are picking a small house which does not draw attention to materialistic elements.
It is also a confined space with not a lot of natural lighting. During this scene in the video, tensions begin to build between the couple which builds up to the climax of the video. The low lighting throughout the house reflects the darker side of the relationship that is going to unfold. The confined space throughout the house will emphasise the growing tension and further aid us in building to the climax of the video.
The house also leads straight onto a public footpath which is where we will film the climax of the video, where the male pushes the female to the ground.

Posters and Digipak (findings and choices)
We have been doing research into fonts and colour schemes and trying to find some that would fit the codes and conventions of the indie pop genre. We found it very hard trying to decide between multiple fonts and colour schemes, so we decided to create a number of surveys to consult our target audience. The number of people whom responded to our surveys have varied depending on their availability, but we have had a good amount who aided our decision making.
In our digipak survey, the questions asked were "What would you like to find in an indie pop digipak? (tick all that apply)", "What colour scheme do you prefer to see?" and "Which font do you prefer out of the following?"
On our first question, we found that 85% of our target audience wanted to see photos of the artists, 100% wanted to see lyrics, 57% acknowledgements, 42% artist information and 14% ratings/reviews. We took these answers into account and decided to include a little of everything, as we found that each option had been picked at least once.

Posters and Digipak
On our first question, we found that 85% of our target audience wanted to see photos of the artists, 100% wanted to see lyrics, 57% acknowledgements, 42% artist information and 14% ratings/reviews. We took these answers into account and decided to include a little of everything, as we found that each option had been picked at least once.
On our second question, we found that 42% of our target audience wanted to see this colour scheme:
28% of our target audience wanted to see this colour scheme:
14% of our target audience wanted to see this colour scheme:
14% of our target audience wanted to see this colour scheme:
And, finally, 0% wanted to see this colour scheme:
On our third question, we found that 14% of our target audience preferred this font:
42% preferred this font:
0% preferred this font:
28% preferred this font:
And lastly 14% preferred this font:
Following these findings, we decided to create a variety of different posters. We also made some changes where we saw fit - for example, in our colour scheme, we decided not to use the one that had most votes as it did not fit the indie pop genre conventions. Therefore we decided to go for a black and white colour scheme as something too colourful or bright (such as the blue) would have drawn the attention of the audience to the colour rather than the actual band name or what is happening in the photo itself. We felt it was distracting and therefore decided to go for something more common of this genre. The black and white is very simple and it shows that the band and the music itself is very authentic.
In terms of fonts, we were very torn as, as a group, we liked the font Adobe Arabic (pictured below) however we hadn't included it in our survey. We also wanted to draw a border on our poster, because we had liked it after seeing the band we are studying use it. We also thought it was perfectly linked with our video and the narrative in it, as the border can suggest that the couple portrayed in the poster are caged. The fact that they are to the side of the poster and not in the centre shows that they are on the edge of exiting the cage and escaping, however they are headed for the tree, which is in the middle of the poster, showing that they can never truly break free.
(Adobe Arabic)
The reason choosing was so difficult is because we also liked the fonts that were most popular among our target audience, so we made three different posters with those different fonts and created another survey so that our target audience could pick between the posters.
In this survey, we observed that 60% of our TA preferred this poster:
20% of our TA preferred this poster:
And lastly 20% of our TA preferred this poster:
Due to these statistics we chose to go with the one that was most popular - Adobe Arabic, which was our favourite font as well. Now that the font was chosen we found it easier to create another three posters with different borders. Despite wanting to put a border onto our poster, we decided it would be best to consult our TA as well, giving them the option of having no border as well. We chose to do this after the font survey because once we picked the font we wouldn't have to worry about creating posters with 3 different types of borders for each font.
40% of our target audience preferred no border:
40% of our target audience preferred a grey border:
13% preferred the white border:
And 4% preferred the black border:
Due to the fact that the top 2 posters were tied (no border and grey border), we put out another survey to let our TA decide which one was better out of these.
53% of our TA preferred no border:
And 46% of our TA preferred the grey border:
Due to this, we settled on the poster with no border.
Taking into account the information that our target audience gave us in terms of fonts, colour schemes and borders, we created our digipak to match our poster. We also took into account what our TA told us from the first question, and included everything in our digipak.
